BMW Gearbox Tool

I decided to have a go at making a suitable tool for removing the nut (torqued to 180 lbs ft) and the drive flange from its plain taper. I had a slice of 4" steel bar about 1 1/4" thick which provided the main body and an old lathe chuck C spanner which would be suitable for a handle. Other parts were just pieces of scrap from the collection.  I bought high tensile bolts M8x1mm pitch which were slightly too long but was reluctant to shorten them (they might come in handy for another job!) so made a few spacers.  The extraction bolt is threaded 1/2" UNF to give a good wedge action to draw the flange from the taper.

This shows the register projection which prevents the extractor from rubbing on the gear casing.

This shows the assembled tool showing the keep plate which prevents the centre post turning when in extractor mode

This is the body of the tool bolted to the drive flange - this time to tighten the nut prior to final torque tightening.
